Spring birdies have migrated...

I have been focussing on adding to my crochet birdie collection. I have made some of these previously. These are made from crochet granny circles, adding ribbons or other suitable materials for the tails, and buttons for the eyes.

I made a pair of pastel birds, from a pretty mixed coloured ball which was lovely and soft.

I added some organza and satin ribbon for their tails and some coloured wooden buttons for eyes.

I had another mixed ball, this one in brighter shades and the colour changes happened more frequently, so it had a completely different effect.

By adding different coloured beaks and edging, different style tails, and different patterned hanging ribbons, it made them completely unique.

This flock has migrated south to the Handmade studios, where each bird will be hoping to be picked out and find lovely new homes to nest in. Hopefully I will get the chance to visit next month, as it is near where my Mums lives, and I can see how they've settled in...

Spring birdies to fight the winter blues...

So the weather has been appalling!! Winter seems determined not to leave, and it won't give spring a chance. We've had snow, heavy rain, icy winds and sub zero temperatures!!!
Despite this, i've been determined that Spring will finally battle it's way through, so i've gone back to the crochet, and have been growing the 'little flock of birdies'

A year ago I started to make crochet birds, as part of my learning, as circles were the first thing I learnt to make, and the circles just developed!

I chose some multi coloured yarn from my stash

and developed a fresh new birdie

by adding wooden buttons for eyes, coloured ribbon for a tail, and patterned ribbon for hanging...

the two birdies, past and present have come together

I have made some other varieties in the past, including a robin, a patriotic bird and a little purple bird

And have a couple of larger Mummy birds

Just a few more colourways that I want to try to complete this colourful flock...

Butterflies, hoping for spring....

So last week I didnt manage to do a post, due to the busyness at work priar to mothers day, and then we had a lovely visit from my Mother on Sunday :)

This week, despite being freezing or wet and gloomy, i've been working on my butterflies, with the hope that Spring is just around the corner!
So last month, I had started my orange butterfly, which I had nearly completed.

I finished this one off by adding the hanging ribbon, and used some wire to make the antennae.

I also started and nearly finished another.

This one I wanted to experiment with, adding some lurex thread to the wool roving.

So rather than using my usual colourful palette, I stuck to pastel shades to show up the sparkles of the lurex.

The lurex was a little hard to control but with a thin layer of fleece over the top it was manageable!

I added the hanging ribbon, and for that extra sparkle (because you can never have enough sparkle surely!) I added some sequins!

I just need to find some silver wire to finish it off...

I was in the flow, and I had a little gingerbread cutter, so I decided to start a little man.
I've not made much progress as yet, but thinking I can dress him and maybe add a quaint little bow tie, something I can have a bit of fun with :)

Prague city break...

Last year was mine + hubbys 40th, so I bought him a little trip to Prague, as he'd never done a city trip before!

Wow what a stunning place, amazing architecture literally around every corner!

After a quick + easy flight (so much easier with no baggage + checking in online!) we ventured straight on to public transport, rather than a pricey taxi! A bus took us straight to the nearest metro station, where there were simple ticket options, dependent on length of travel. We chose the 3 day ticket. The speedy train got us there in moments, + after walking a couple of blocks we found our hotel. But there was an issue! They had had a big flood which had left them with major maintenance to complete. But they had made all the necessary alternatives, with another hotel booked + a taxi to take us there. On arrival it was a case of dump the bags + get straight out to see the sights!
There was quite a lot of snow when we arrived, but wasn't anywhere near as cold as we expected, and the UK could really learn a lesson, as all main roads and paths were cleared, after a couple of days there were hardly signs left...

We found Wenceslas Square, and wandered the local shops, including the large Palladium shopping centre.

We grabbed an Indian meal, as the tiredness caught up with us!
Day 2:-

It was on the trams to get across the river and up to the Mala Strana area, as we wanted to visit the Castle and Cathedral today.

We strolled around the castle (Prazsky hrad). The temperature had dropped and it felt bitterly cold. We saw the changing of the guard, and wandered around the surrounding buildings, St George's Basilica and the Old Royal Palace.

We stopped off for lunch to warm up before venturing to St Vitus's Catahedral.
It was an amazing Gothic sight.

We went inside to see the vast interior.

And the large amount of stained glass windows were stunning too...

We had to stop for some Hot chocolate as it felt colder in the Cathedral than it was outside!!
Lastly we found the Golden Lane, which were the Alchemists cottages. It was such a cute lane with sweet colourful little houses with quirky chimneys. You could go into the cottages, where some of them housed historical pieces including a vast corridor of armour, whilst others were craft stores.

After checking out the great views we made our way back down the steep hill. We strolled around the lanes of the Lesser town, and headed towards Charles Bridge.
By now it had got dark, so the vendours had packed up, but we had a stroll to see the surrounding town lit up. We decided we'd return the following day.
For dinner we wanted to try the traditional meal of Goulash (all Czch dishes are very meat orientated, so only this one appealed to me). We decided to try a place mentioned in our guide book, so we went away from the main town, but once we located it, it wasn't exactly the cheap meal we had in mind! But there was a lovely pub a couple of doors down that was just what we were looking for. Although we are 'wine drinkers' we had to partake in the local beer to go with it!
The Goulash and dumplings were gorgeous, the meat was tender and the gravy rich and tasty, the dumplings were a great accompaniment and the beer was perfect to wash it down!

Day 3:-
We started the day locally by going up the Powder Towder, so we could see the great views across the whole of the town!

We made it up the spiral staircase, thankfully there was a breather room halfway up with some pretty stained glass windows. It was well worth the climb though, as we had a fantastic 360 degree view.

The plan for the day was to see the Astrological clock, the Bridge and the Jewish area.
Staromestske namesti, the Old Town square, was so amazing that we spent most of our day there. The architecture was amazing on most of the buildings, with a mix of Baroque, Rococo and Gothic styles.

The Astronomical clock was stunning, and we waited on the hour to see the little characters come out of the two doors and hear the chimes.

We stopped to try a couple of tasty treats. A skewer of fried potatoes, and a lovely freshly made pastry.

We had to drag ourselves away from the area as we did really want to get to the bridge in daylight.
There were vendours all along, mainly artists, and historical sculpted saints along the whole length.

we had a lovely Italian meal to finish off our fantastic day.

Day 4:-
For our last day we didnt have any specific plans, but tried to wander the areas that we hadn't covered before.
We started by going alongside the river.

We did a bit of shopping and a last look at the stunning buildings.

Hooky time...

So this week I put aside the needle-felting as I fancied doing some more crochet.
I will go back and complete the butterfly soon, and promise to share the results!!

I went back to my ripple cushion, and added a few more rows. Its nice to go back to and its very relaxing to do and flows nicely, it is growing slowly but surely!!

I also had a rummage through my yarn stash!

I fancied having a go at trying to crochet with my pom-pom yarn. I had no idea what it would turn out like.

As i started to do single crochet stitches in between the bobbles.

I decided I would turn it in to a long skinny scarf ,which would purely be a decorative accessory.

I like the way that its curled as its grown.

There wont be a Handmade harbour post from me next week as me and hubby are off on a trip to Prague :)

Butterflies...

After finishing my heart collection I had a look for some different shaped cookie cutters, but other than online I couldnt find any.

I came across a silicone mould in a butterfly shape, so I felt sure I could utilise this. It didn't really work , even with putting a piece of pre-made felt at the bottom, it was too solid for the fibres to bind. However, I did use this as a template and I found that by just drawing any shape I could work upon this, which gives me great scope for any future shapes.

After using so much pink I went for a more vibrant orange.

Layered with some yellow and white.

After covering the front, I added some beads to add colour highlights.

Going on, I need to add the hanging ribbon, and felt across the back to build up the thickness, and find something, possible coloured wire to use for the antennae.

Mini handbag hearts

This week I havent had too much spare time, due to plenty of travelling for work.
I did however complete my Personalised Hearts, which i'd started last week.

I just needed to attatch the ribbon, by felting the backs of each heart, and add the buttons for a finishing touch!

I decided to go back to the smaller versions. I had found some little brads and I wondered if  I would be able to use these to adorn some mini hearts. I tried this by making the front of the heart, pushing the brad through, and then felting over the back.

So the 'Handbag Heart Charms' evolved.

I'm thinking I may look for some different shaped cookie cutters to try some different shapes and ideas to move this forward.
